In artists, status anxietyArtworkExhibitionPublicationArchiveReference materials

In us, status anxiety (working title) is a long-term research project I initiated in 2022. It focuses on "intellectuals" (be they claimed or self-proclaimed) and reflects on knowledge and status anxiety within intellectual systems by discussing philosophy and theology though art. In modern society, knowledge has become a form of identity marker. This recognition and reputation often makes us feel both privileged and anxious, and distracts us from the pure pursuit of wisdom. Artists, often regarded as intellectuals, seek the admiration and recognition of the public. But they are increasingly distancing themselves from true 'wisdom'. After all, knowledge does not always equal wisdom. These phenomena reflect a common dilemma within knowledge systems. Within us, status anxiety challenges intellectuals to re-evaluate their social functions, their roles within the knowledge industry, and the psychological conflicts they face on a personal level.

Today, anxiety obscures intellectuals' sense of purpose in society, leading to an increasing neglect of wisdom and knowledge transmission. The scholar Daniel Markovits argues that intellectuals must learn to recognise and address the anxieties that fragment their minds, from xenophobia to competition. This fragmentation has led our generation to fear being undervalued or dismissed by the knowledge industry and its systems.

I have long been fascinated by exploring the nature of knowledge and wisdom, themes that lie at the heart of my artistic practice. My work often revolves around the tension between academic systems, knowledge structures and artist identity. I believe that intelligence is intangible, yet undeniably present. Intelligence, knowledge and wisdom each have their own distinctive qualities. True 'intelligence' arises when knowledge and wisdom are combined and harmonised to a level of effective understanding and application.

Similarly, I am passionate about exploring my art practice, while also focusing on theology and philosophy—to connecting with more people through my experiences in these fields.

In us, status anxiety
